  • New Mexico and Tennessee Wilderness Bills Move Closer to Enactment

    The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests held a hearing on legislation to protect more than 260,000 acres of wilderness in southern New Mexico and eastern Tennessee.

  • Senators Introduce Bill to Protect Tennessee Land

    The campaign applauded Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Bob Corker (R-TN) for the introduction of the Tennessee Wilderness Act, a bill to permanently safeguard nearly 20,000 acres of the Cherokee National Forest. If enacted, the bill would mark the first new wilderness measure in Tennessee in nearly 25 years.

  • Four Wilderness Bills Get Hearing

    The campaign commended the Senate Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests for holding a hearing on legislation to protect nearly 90,000 acres of wilderness in western Washington State, central and coastal Oregon and northern New Mexico.

  • Bill to Protect Northern NM Wilderness Introduced in Senate and House

    Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) late yesterday introduced the "Rio Grande del Norte National Conservation Area Establishment Act."  Representative Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) introduced companion legislation in the House. The bills will protect more than 236,000 acres northwest of Taos, N.M., including more than 21,000 acres of designated wilderness and over 214,000 acres as a national conservation area. Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) is an original cosponsor.

    The Pew Environment Group's Australia Program joined forces with the Australian Floodplains Association, the Cooper’s Creek Protection Group and the Wilderness Society to seek support from political parties for the permanent protection of river waters in the Channel Country from over extraction and pollution.
